Slane was born in Germania in 910 a.d. and was raised a commoner's son. His father was a tradesman, and his mother took care of him and his two sisters. When he was coming of age as a young man, he was conscripted into a local landholders army to defend their lands. Like all of Europe, warfare was rampant within Germania. One of the greatest threats to the Eastern borders of Europe was the relentless attacks by hordes of armies from the East spurred by the great Ghengis Khan. It was during one of these great attacks, that Slane's luck ran out. His lord's army had been crushed, and he was captured and taken into slavery with the Mongol army. He travelled in chains for many miles over the Silk road and the The Great Peaks of the Himalayas, until eventually he found himself deep in the heart of the Mongol Empire.
Years passed as he survived and learned the ways of his captors. Their language, habits, and cultures all became well known to him. This was Slane's life for 6 years, and he grew accustomed to it although, while he was bound, his heart never gave up the hope of freedom. It was a cold winter's day on the steppes of Mongolia in 931 a.d., when a strange visitor arrived in his village. He was asian in appearance, but his dress, and especially his weapons, looked foreign. He could not hear what was spoken but could see by the exchange that the mysterious stranger had taken an interest in him. Slane had been sold, and his new Master, would change his destiny forever.
He was Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary swordsman and warrior from the island of Japan. From first appearances, Musashi had the look of a wild man, unclean, unbathed, and unkept. But his discipline and refinement were much greater than that of Slane's previous Mongol captures. His journey with Musashi took him even further to the East, many miles through Manchuria China and what is now known as Korea where eventually they came to the sea. Musashi was a man of little words, but those he did speak, were of utmost importance and extremely profound. It did not take Slane long to learn that his new Master would tolerate none of his insulant pride as his former captors had. It never became clear to him why Musashi had purchased him. However, what did become clear was the fact that he had never seen a warrior more skilled with a blade. Even the feared Mongol Warriors were no where near Miyamoto's skill. As Slane took interest and began to ask questions, Musashi would teach him and answer - usually with a firm blow with a wooden practice sword. It had also become clear to Slane that he had fallen into the possession of a traveling warrior. Moving from From town to town, village to village, they would travel, exploring new schools and styles of combat and swordsmanship - and inevitably, dueling those warriors who wished to test their skills against Musashi. In all his travels with Miyamoto, Slane had never seen him defeated. He began to feel fortunate to be the recipient of such skill passed on and a respect began to grow for the man who held him in chains.
It was on the shores of the Sea of Japan, that Musashi told him their final destination. They were heading to Japan where Musashi had sworn vengeance upon a man of great importance who had wronged him many years ago by using a great bushido priest to place a curse upon him. He never described the curse and before long, had boarded a ship and were bound for Japan.
It was in the middle of that voyage, in 941 a.d that Slane experienced horrors such as he had never known before. He had been shackled below decks, the seas thrashing about in a powerful storm that assaulted their vessel with colossal waves and pounding wind and rain. Unaccustomed to ocean travel, Slane was ill and vomiting from sea sickness when he heard the first screams. He was not sure if they were the sounds of wind howling through the ropes of the ship at first, but as they grew in number and became closer in proximity, he knew something terrible was going on. As his eyes stared in horror at the door to the inner cabins, it exploded and a beast straight from his nightmares rushed into the cargo hold. A creature that stood upon two legs a full head taller than the tallest man he had ever seen, but with the upper torso covered in jet black fur and the head of a gigantic wolf. Slane was attacked, but managed to flee when the creature tore the chain that held him to the ship loose and became distracted by crew members rushing into the cargo hold weapons in hand to kill the creature.
As he fled and hid he could see the crew mount a futile attack against the rampaging lycan. When the madness finally came to an end all around him were the signs of death and carnage. The sight of horrors aboard the washed up vessel still haunt him to this day. As the storm blew the crew-less ship back westward towards mainland Asia, it crashed upon the rocks of the shore. Freedom had indeed come at a price. Slane gathered what he could find, including his Master's Katana and Wakisashi and began his travels westward... back to civilization and back to any semblance of his home that may still exist. It only took him until the next full moon to know, that something terrible had happened to him aboard that ship. His wounds healed far to quickly, and Slane waved it off as the benefits of freedom. It took him a bit of time, but he knew he had changed... he had become a lycan. The visions of that creature that attacked him, crashing through the door and slaughtering everything in its path, remains burned in his mind. Though he had no proof, he knew that what he was now, was due to the lycan who had attacked him. Surprise it to say, he never saw Musashi again.
Now, hundreds of years later, Slane travels from town to town finding a way to cope with his curse. Using whatever skills he has gained to make a living for himself. He is a master of the Katana and Wakisashi and has had training from a master swordsman in Musashi. Being a warrior by trade, his urges to transform into his beast at the sight of blooshed and battle is a bit more resistant. He has learned of the beast within himself, and does his best to control the change. He uses the clarity of meditation and martial arts to help him keep the beast at bay. But as with all lycans... it eventually will come out.
