Helbane
Heroe
Location: Enchantica
It had been quite awhile since Helbane bothered travelling the short distance from her small hideaway into the realm of Enchantica. Mostly, she avoided anywhere that might hold the possibility of running into anyone she knew. Or better yet, anyone she didn't. Folks these days just didn't seem to take too fondly to the outspoken young girl.
Tonight, however, it had been necessicary to venture forth. She'd caught herself, more often then not lately, talking to the cat. If that wasn't a sure sign that she needed to get herself involved with the land of the living again, Helbane wasn't sure what was.
She was clad, as usual, in a simple gown that looked like she had long since outgrown it. The dark black seemed to only make the paleness of her own skin glow, something that Helbane actually liked. Light colors made her look too average, too gentle. Helbane was anything if not different. Her hair was fastened in two seperate sections with simple ribbon, so that each tied loop bobbed around on either side of her head with every step she took.
Her first stop, as usual, was to the Archive Rooms. Now that the creepy Vampire lady was no longer running it, Helbane liked to sneak inside and out again with a new addition. Enchantica seemed to be the only place that didn't seem overly shocked with a floating book. Despite this, Helbs carried the too heavy binding clutched to her chest. Nothing quite drew other's attention then a book held by invisible hands.
Using her shoulder, Helbane pushed against the solid door, just enough for it to open a fraction of the way, and slipped her frame inside, pausing just inside the door until she heard it click shut behind her. Her eye's studied the small room, and a pleased smile came to light up her expression when she discovered there was no one there to witness her presence.
With slow casual steps that folks tended to adapt when they knew no one was nearby to see them, Helbane crossed further into the room and begin studying the titles stacked along the walls.
Slowly, one book after the other, Helbane studied the titles. There had been a few new additions, but it didn't seem like there was anything that really called to her. Nothing that truely said 'Hey Helbane, you'll really like me." And certainly nothing that could help her master the poor excuse of magic she loved to practice.
Carefully, she lowered the heavy book down to the floor, and straightened her spine once more. There wasn't anyone here to try and take it, and Helbane really didn't want to carry it around with her. Now, if Killian were here, she'd more then happily float it around. She loved picking on that poor fool. But he wasn't here, and she didn't feel the need to show up anyone else.
So, with the book abandoned on the floor, Helbane continued circling the small Archive Room, her right index finger tracing over one book after another, silently reading the titles as she skimmed past them, lips moving involuntarily.
::After wandering the courtyard for a time, bumping into no one, he finally started to hear something that would ease his spirits. Drunken singing, coming from a nearby tavern. Surely, they would have food! This brought a smile to his face, an expression quite rare these days, but genuine none the less.::
::The dark winged knight increased his pace, marching toward the pleasant sound of a lively tavern. He pushed open the doors and stepped inside, then stood there a moment, allowing his eyes to get used to the light::
Finally selecting a small book that she had never seen before, Helbane tucked it beneath her arm and backtracked her progress around the room until she reached where she had first begun at. She stood there, staring down at her book, and then glanced around her at the abandoned room once more. With a playful grin, Helbane then snapped her fingers, and watched the massive book hover from the floor. The plan, was that it would levitate just enough so Helbane could reach out and scoop it up... But as with Helbs, nothing ever seemed to go according to plan.
The book shook a little off the ground, and started drifting skyward. Unfortunately, it didn't stop at the right height and continued it's steady progress upward. Helbane blinked, glanced around again to ensure no one saw the mistake, and needed to bounce on her tippytoes to reach above her head and grasp at the leather binding.
Grumbling quietly to herself, she manually pulled the book down and hugged it to her chest. Now, she had two books in her arms. She had considered heading outside and reading under the stars, but the protests that came from within quickly abandoned that plan.
Instead, Helbane slipped from the Archive Room the same way she entered, and glanced around... No one in sight. Sighing, and with a quite pleased grin on her face, she oh so casually strolled forward, heading for the Tavern.
The courtyard seemed dead.. Ghost town frittered through her mind, and she hunched her shoulders, gripping those books deathly to her chest. Her pace quickened until she could hear the sounds that only the drunken could seem to make. The door was just swinging shut as she started toward it. As with the Archive Room, Helbane used her shoulder to push open the door to the Tavern, and slipped herself inside, accidently colliding with the man whom had decided that standing in the doorway was the perfect place to be.
::Helbane would meet with a wall of fluffy black feathers, not exactly the worst thing to run into when caught by surprise. Heroe had only been standing in the doorway because he thought there was no one behind him, but quickly learned the truth of the matter.::
::His wings collapsed tightly and neatly against his back, not taking up nearly as much space now, and he turned to face his collider. Seeing a young woman, he couldn't help but offer a kind smile and a brief bow of his head.::
A cushoned being.. Helbane closed her eye's at the impact, and before she even opened them assumed it would be a rather shapely drunkard. The voice didn't match, when it did address her, and she opened her eye's slowly. Okay, definately NOT what she was expecting.
In her shock, Helbane managed to drop not one, but both of the books she had been holding, the sound of them landing squarely on the floor between them barely registering through the commotion within the Tavern herself.
She opened her mouth, no doubt ready to lash into him, but nothing came out. Closing it, she cursed herself. It was suddenly hot in here.. Which could only mean one thing. She was blushing like a bloody schoolgirl.
She gave the so obviously not an overweight drunkard a nod, her eye's on his forehead.
Alright, there we go. She could think. She could talk. Now if she could get her knees to cooperate, she could just bend down, scoop up her books and keep going. A stiff drink would be nice, but Helbane didn't drink.. Perhaps tonight would be an exception.
Her voice grew more study as she spoke again.
Where on earth had that come from? She was never polite!
::Ever the polite one, Heroe swiftly bent and captured the books into his arms, then offered them. Judging by the sheer weight of the books, he could tell they could only be the ramblings of a conjurer's intelligent mind.::
::A broad smile found his scruffy face, something he couldn't hold back and found no desire to. He had changed over the years, more confident, healthy, somewhat happy and feeling useful. His sense of humor however, still needed room for improvement tho, as the joke wasn't all that good. He wasn't smiling about that though, it was the spark he could immediately sense in this girl that was the source, and the expression lingered as his gentle eyes scanned her face.::
Light reading? Helbs glanced from his face, to the books in his hand. Was that a joke? Her cheeks flamed brighter and she reached out carefully to take hold of her books from his outstretched hands.
The smile was nice. No one ever smiled at Helbane. Mostly she got scowls, glowers and looks that could kill. The smile unnerved her. Set her on edge. And at the same time, it was curious. When she realized she was staring, Helbane quickly adverted her eyes once more.
She stubbed her toe into the floor, and struggled not to glance up again. The weight of his gaze bore into her and still she did not glance up. Instead, she made a point of trying to glance around him, since she clearly was too short to look over his shoulder.
::Realizing by her shy behavior he was studying her a little too closely, he softly cleared his throat and side stepped a little. His arm motioned toward the rest of the tavern as he spoke.::
::He glanced around at the room, noticing the hustle and bustle of contented drinkers and villigers, and seemed to relax his shoulders and his wings a little. He looked back to the girl holding her books and shrugged a little, wondering if she herself may be meeting someone.::
Well, she could say she was meeting someone indeed, which would most likely send him on his way to harrass someone else. But then again, should he stick around and notice no one come to her, he'd be aware she lied. And let's be honest... Did she really want to sit alone in the crowded tavern?
She unfolded and refolded her arms, the books growing rather heavy. Oh, if only she'd been good enough to use magic in a public place like this.
Her eye's scanned along with his, trying to search out an empty seat. At least, that's what she told herself she was doing, though she knew perfectly well she wouldnt' find one out of the corner of her eye where the soft wall stood.
::He smiled briefly::
::He rubbed the back of his neck, realizing it was a little sore and he had been standing there for a minute, and keeping her as well. Politely however, he offered his consideration, should she be the type that enjoys her own solitude.::
::He bowed his head slightly, then brushed his hair out of his eyes.::
The moment he started talking to her, Helbane turned her attention back to him, and felt an uneasy sensation in her stomache at the absent minded gesture of brushing his hair out from his line of sight.
Usually she'd brush aside anyone that dared inturrupt her reading, but seeing as she had 'borrowed with no intent to return' the book from the Archive Room, there was no hurry.
Her eye's lowered to the floor at the last moment, staring at his boots as if they were the most fastinating things. With the exception of Killian, she hadn't spoken that much to any member of the opposite sex before... How disappointing.
::He blinked at that, surely surprised. So far she had seemed perfectly pleasant, so it didnt make much sense. Girls are ever the mystery however, never giving themselves enough credit::
::He smiled though and glanced around. Leading the way through a bit of a crowd he found a small table near a window. There would be at least one candle at each table, and most of them lit. This table's candle was on the window sill however, as if it had reciently been washed down.::
::Heroe slid a wooden chair out for her and stood behind it.::
She could feel the heat rush up her cheeks as he actually withdrew a chair for her. No one had ever done so before in her entire life, and Helbane wasn't certain what to do about it. While she tried to figure it out, she settled down in the chair, taking the books with her. Afterall, the table wasn't exactly her's and thus she couldn't just flop her books upon it.
Blinking, she realized while she was thinking, he had actually been talking. Something about food, wasn't it? Was she hungry? Heck, she couldn't even tell...
Helbane didn't work enough for a living to afford anything else. Infact, when she came into Enchantica from her hideahole, she hadn't brought any coins with her. Water, at least, was free.
Thinking him distracted, Helbane muttered something quietly under her breath, and then snapped her fingers. It was, generally, the only spell she actually had practiced enough to get right. The two books that had been on her lap, and thus technically under the table, disappeared.
She turned her head, so she could watch her companion for this evening. Oh yes, she liked to watch...
::He slid the chair in for her after she sat gently rest his hand on her shoulder::
::He bowed his head and made to turn.::
He didnt give her time to answer, only turned and moved through the crowd toward the bar keep.::
::Before long he was returning, moving carefully through the crowd. With a bowl of stew in each hand and a small loaf of bread wrapped in a cloth tucked in the crook of his arm, he kept a close eye out for anyone to bump into him. It would be a good thing too, as a rather large man with additionally large mug of ale tried to back into him. Swiftly his wing spread behind the man to embrace the impact, neatly in a way as to not spill a drop of soup or a step in his stride, the man was redirected. The large man turned in a way to energetically figure out who was moving him.. however, upon meeting Heroes gaze he quickly became passive”the effect bumping into an angel has on people.::
::Soon Heroe was laying the bowls down and taking his seat::
::He offered his smile again, and broke the bread in half::
She hadn't been able to reply for his request that she have a bowl as well, before he had disappeared. She watched his retreating form just as eagerly as she watched his approaching. What, a girl was allowed to look!
The sight of wing spreading had Helbane gasping. It wasn't that it was weird, or scary. Moreso that it was new... Beautiful. Enchanting, even. Not that he needed it. Then again, Helbane always did enjoy watching members of the opposite sex. She could watch when she couldn't talk.
When he reached their table, Helbane was still staring at him. She couldn't help it. Hell, she didn't even realize she was doing it! She barely registered him placing a bowl down infront of her, nor the movement of breaking the bread in half. There was bread?
She smiled, one of those awkward shy smiles, and forced her eyes to the bowl of stew steaming infront of her. Now that she could smell it, her stomache began grumbling. Her voice, barely above a whisper, tried to distract the noise.
::His voice was calm and collected, deep and soothing. His expressions friendly and polite.::
::He trailed off a little.::
::The angel unbuckled the straps of his chest plate and slid the heavy thing to the ground, eager to get out of it and a load off. He produced a kerchief with the insignia of a griffon from a pocket and draped it over his lap, under the table. Well mannored and polite, Heroe would take spoonfuls carefully and chew with his mouth closed, and would only speak after he had finished swallowing::
She chuckled quietly, giggled rather, but there was no way she was gonna admit that. Picking up her own spoon, Helbane absentminded stirred the stew around, eyes watching it wash back and forth.
She wasn't polite, usually. And she certainly wasn't mannered.
There we go, that was more like it. No stuttering like a fool, no girly giggles or embarassing silences. No more acting like a school girl who had never seen an angel before.
She raised a spoonful of the broth to her mouth and popped it in. At least she didn't slurp it! Spooneful after spoonful, without even allowing a moment's pause inbetween, she shovelled.
::He grinned, enjoying her healthy appetite, knowing he made the right choice to bring her some food.::
::He looked down at his soup in reflection for a moment, but began to eat again. Not quite as vigorous as the young lady, for if he ate too fast it would surely catch up to him, but the soup was very good, surprisingly.::
::After a while he looked suddenly surprised and started to look around, somewhat concerned.::
She stopped eatting so suddenly, that her spoon fell into the bowl. She hadn't thought he'd noticed... She probably should have thought that plan through a little more. Her face easily paled, no longer blushing, but rather as if she had seen a ghost.
Her eye's adverted back to her bowl, but she couldn't finish it without sticking her fingers into the stew. Pale flesh, hot food... Not a good combination. Instead, she lowered her hands to her lap, fingers fidgetting underneath the table, and watched him, thinking a change of topic may be best.
::He shrugged a little, wondering why she had trouble explaining that. He reached out with both hands and took her bowl, then tilted it slightly to move the liquid away from her spoon, so she might be able to retrieve it with out sticking her fingers in the soup.::
She smiled shyly, as he took hold of her bowl. She was done. Now that she stopped eatting, she realized that she hadn't been conducting herself as one of her age ought to. She did, however, remove the spoon, but held up her hand, palm towards him, as if to say she'd had enough of it.
She gave a shy but gentle smile, feeling herself relaxing just a tad bit. Helbane still could not figure out why she hadn't laid lashings on this one, as she normally would. There was just something.. refining about sitting with an angel. Something that made you want to be on your best behavior.
Helbane propped her elbows up on the table and cradled her chin in the upturned palms of her hand, her eye's watching him best she could without seeming as if she were staring.
::He leaned back in his seat, also finished eating. It was refreshing having such a good meal, exactly what he needed. And with company too? Even better. And from a pretty girl, he felt spoiled::
::He offered a reassuring smile, but showed interest in what she had to say regarding the matter. He was of course, oblivious to her attempt to change the subject.::
Helbane chuckled quietly, that blush instantly climbing her chest and cheeks again. Get away with murder, eh? No, not likely. Her voice hushed a bit and she leaned towards him, as if sharing a secrent.
She didnt' really want to tell him she was obnoxious and a struggling practioner of magic. That usually scared people off and to be honest, she was enjoying a conversation with someone other then the cat.
Once again, Helbane tried to change the topic onto something less.. personal.
She flashed him a full on smile, before once again adverting her eyes. Her fingers began fidgetting underneath the surface of the table once more.

"No, no obbiously not. No worries. I'm still in one piece. Thank the lord for soft landings..."
Where on earth had that come from? She was never polite!

::He trailed off a little.::
"Good food seems like an excellent thing to spend it on."
"Well I think the mystery has gone long enough, what might thy name be, mlady?"
She chuckled quietly, giggled rather, but there was no way she was gonna admit that. Picking up her own spoon, Helbane absentminded stirred the stew around, eyes watching it wash back and forth.
She wasn't polite, usually. And she certainly wasn't mannered.
"They call me Helbane, Sire. And who might thee be?"
"A pleasure, Lady Helbane. My name is Sir Heroe. I've been employed as a night and a healer for some time now, but recently felt like a break."
"Did someone steal your books??"
She stopped eatting so suddenly, that her spoon fell into the bowl. She hadn't thought he'd noticed... She probably should have thought that plan through a little more. Her face easily paled, no longer blushing, but rather as if she had seen a ghost.
"Oh.. Uh... No. No, I uh. I put them somewhere safe whilst thee fetched dinner."
"And this break thee sought.. Tis what brings you here this evening?"
"Oh! Well good!"
::He shrugged a little, wondering why she had trouble explaining that. He reached out with both hands and took her bowl, then tilted it slightly to move the liquid away from her spoon, so she might be able to retrieve it with out sticking her fingers in the soup.::
"Yes it is.. And thee? What brings ye to a tavern all by thyself. Do ye come often?"
She smiled shyly, as he took hold of her bowl. She was done. Now that she stopped eatting, she realized that she hadn't been conducting herself as one of her age ought to. She did, however, remove the spoon, but held up her hand, palm towards him, as if to say she'd had enough of it.
"Nay, I'm afraid I do not. There was once when I was frequently visiting the Tavern, however tis seems I cause more trouble then I am worth, and thus try to keep away from people as often as I can."
She gave a shy but gentle smile, feeling herself relaxing just a tad bit. Helbane still could not figure out why she hadn't laid lashings on this one, as she normally would. There was just something.. refining about sitting with an angel. Something that made you want to be on your best behavior.
"Thee stated thy used to live here some time ago... Doth thee plan to stay, now that you have returned?"
Helbane propped her elbows up on the table and cradled her chin in the upturned palms of her hand, her eye's watching him best she could without seeming as if she were staring.
"That I do not know... I kind of go.. where I am needed."
::He leaned back in his seat, also finished eating. It was refreshing having such a good meal, exactly what he needed. And with company too? Even better. And from a pretty girl, he felt spoiled::
"Trouble you say? What kind of trouble could such a girl get into? I imagine anyone in here would just about let ye get away with murder."
"Shall we just say I am nay a welcome patrion in these parts. I tend to make too many mistakes with my... hobbies."
She didnt' really want to tell him she was obnoxious and a struggling practioner of magic. That usually scared people off and to be honest, she was enjoying a conversation with someone other then the cat.
Once again, Helbane tried to change the topic onto something less.. personal.
"I shall wish thee extends thy stay, Sire Heroe."
She flashed him a full on smile, before once again adverting her eyes. Her fingers began fidgetting underneath the surface of the table once more.
